Modeling of Dendritic Growth in Alloy Solidification with Melt Convection

چکیده
In typical solidification processes the flow of molten metal is usually regarded as an unavoidable phenomenon potentially affecting the morphology of dendritic growth. Fundamental understanding of such flow is thus important for predicting and controlling solidification microstructures. This paper presents numerical simulations on the evolution of dendritic microstructures with melt convection. A two-dimensional modified cellular automaton (MCA) coupled with a transport model is developed to simulate solidification of binary and ternary alloys in the presence of fluid flow. This model takes into account the effects of the constitutional undercooling and curvature undercooling on the equilibrium interface temperature. It also considers the preferred growth orientation of crystals and solute redistribution during solidification. The flow dynamics and mass transport both by convection and diffusion are numerically solved using a SIMPLE scheme. The physics of the complete time-dependent interaction among melt convection, mass transfer and dendritic growth is naturally included in the model. keyword: Cellular automaton, Convection, Deflection behavior, Dendritic growth, Side-branching.

Modelling of dendritic growth in ternary alloy solidification with melt convection
A two-dimensional lattice Boltzmann-cellular automaton model is coupled with the CALPHAD (Calculation of Phase Diagrams) method for simulating dendritic growth during ternary alloy solidification with convection. In the model, the kinetics of dendritic growth is determined by the difference between the equilibrium liquidus temperature and the actual temperature at the solid/liquid interface, in...
متن کاملModeling of coupled motion and growth interaction of equiaxed dendritic crystals in a binary alloy during solidification
Motion of growing dendrites is a common phenomenon during solidification but often neglected in numerical simulations because of the complicate underlying multiphysics. Here a phase-field model incorporating dendrite-melt two-phase flow is proposed for simulating the dynamically interacted process. The proposed model circumvents complexity to resolve dendritic growth, natural convection and sol...
متن کاملEquiaxed Dendritic Solidification with Convection Part I. Multiscale/Multiphase Modeling
Equiaxed dendritic solidification in the presence of melt convection and solid-phase transport is investigated in a series of three articles. In part I, a multiphase model is developed to predict composition and structure evolution in an alloy solidifying with an equiaxed morphology. The model accounts for the transport phenomena occurring on the macroscopic (system) scale, as well as the grain...
متن کاملModeling Melt Convection in Phase-FieldSimulations of Solidification
A novel diffuse interface model is presented for the direct numerical simulation of microstructure evolution in solidification processes involving convection in the liquid phase. The solidification front is treated as a moving interface in the diffuse approximation as known from phase-field theories. The no-slip condition between the melt and the solid is realized via a drag resistivity in the ...
متن کاملCompositional convection in the solidification of binary alloys
When a binary alloy is directionally solidified, a two-phase mushy dendritic zone is often formed. Interdendritic convection of the melt may occur, and is coupled with compositional convection of the residual melt. If fluid flow velocities are high enough, local melt-back of the dendrites may occur, leading to channel formation, and thus preferred flow paths. In order to predict the onset of co...
